And so the busy holiday season November 26, 2008

officially begins!  Today, I have to get a cardio workout in, get my nails done, babysit, pack for our Detroit trip, and get the heck out of Dodge.  I know that everyone has plans and things to do all the time, but don’t you feel like the holidays just make it that much more busy?  Oh well, it always makes for interesting times.

The DH and I are going to the Thanksgiving Day game between the Lions and the Titans.  The Titans lost to the Yets – ugh, I know – but the Lions have yet to win.  Perhaps this will be the game that changes it?  I laughed too.  But, I guess I shouldn’t laugh too loud…you never know how the games are going to turn out, especially this season!

Heading into Turkey Day:

Good:  I love that football season is in full-swing.  We’ll see two games in two weeks!  Mmmm…Grandma’s stuffing…

Bad:  Staying with the in-laws.  How exactly am I supposed to be good, work out, and eat right throughout this holiday season??

Ugly:  Talent such as that held by Calvin Johnson is wasted on a team such as the Detroit Lions.  Cold weather forces the smokers closer to the buildings/doors, so EVERYONE has to suffer the ill effects of their habit.

Funny:  This past weekend, I went to a concert where there was an inexplicable concentration of Bears fans in jerseys.  On the way out of the concert, I heard a couple of them talking about their great game that day.  I chuckled to myself as I saw the Green Bay sticker on my car window, but wondered what game they were talking about.  It must have been so unimportant that it didn’t stick in my brain like many games do.  I checked when I got home…da Bears had been victorious over the St. Lou-ser Rams.  Whoop-de-freaking-do!

Or just plain disasterous for the Packers?  I think it’s both.  I said I’d be okay with whoever won, and I am…overall.  I just hate seeing the Packers play like it doesn’t matter; or as PackerAaron says “It’s really hard to watch a Packers team that has no heart.”  Sigh.

Anyway, I’m pretty excited for the upcoming weekend.  I have a busy day tomorrow, but I think it will get me in gear.  Today has been totally and inexplicably hellish at work, and now I just don’t want to do anything.  What does this girl do when she doesn’t want to work??  Check out sports stuff, of course!

  • The Pittsburgh Pirates must have the oddest organization in the league.  The As had the whole “MoneyBall” idea, but the Pirates are going a different direction by signing two guys out of India that participated in a baseball-related reality show.  Totally random, I know.
  • College basketball is underway, and since the college team I care about for football has met this season’s demise already, I’m going to start paying attention to that.  Oh, and the BCS sucks.
    • Pur-don’t is sitting at #10 in MSN’s power rankings currently.  Really?
    • Worse: Sparty is sitting at #5.
    • IU lost to Notre Dame (chuckle, snort).  No wonder the folks around here are so quiet about basketball right now.
  • Oh How I Hate Ohio State – I didn’t need a news story to tell me that.
  • DId I mention that the BCS sucks?
  • I wonder how many Titans fans will be at the game on Thursday with us?  I’m wearing something noncommittal, since I care not about either team.
  • Hottie Sportswriter Michael Silver writes this in his 32 Questions:”32. Detroit Lions: If you insist upon watching all four quarters of their game against the Titans on Thursday, how much do you hate talking to your in-laws?”  My answer is that I don’t hate my in-laws, but they’re not even doing anything until after the game is over anyway! ;-)
  • The Minnesota Twins are sporting some throwback jerseys this coming season, but only on Saturdays at the Met-ro-d(r)ome.  Glen Perkins said it’s a nice break from the pinstripes.  He must not like ogling looking at Joe Mauer:
Mmmm...pinstripes AND eyeblack!

Mmmm...pinstripes AND eyeblack!

Now I have to attend a meeting.  I’m going there with thoughts of Hottie Joe Mauer to keep me entertained.  Here’s another picture of him for you – the Not-So-Random Hot Guy Pic:

You are aware that I am only previewing this MNF game because it is my two favorite teams.  I will not root for either team, and I will not care who wins (although I did pick the Pack in my fantasy thingie – by 3).  I love these two teams.  There’s something about teams with heart, and their associated cities/fan bases with similar heart, that I just…well, HEART.  I thought about doing this post last week, but wanted to wait until today – relevance, you know – and I hope I can keep it on a smooth path.  And awwwaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy we go!

The QB Litmus:

Saints RB vs Packers LB:

Reggie isn’t playing, and Deuce just isn’t hot.  So, instead, I’ll preview rookie Mike Bell for the Saints.  He (and Deuce) will be up against a D-Line that’s just so-so at stopping the run.  I picked a LB to represent the run-stop…Desmond Bishop.

Packers RB vs Saints LB:

When he’s actually doing his job, Ryan Grant may be worth his money.  It took him (and apparently, Coach McCarthy) about halfway into the season to get the running game going again.  I picked Saints LB Scott Shanle to rep that team – because he’s the best looking LB, duh.

Saints WR vs Packers Secondary:

The #1 passing offense versus the awesome Packers secondary.  I don’t think I have to introduce the WR I’ll be using.  :-)   However, it’s a tough time picking one of the guys on the other side of the coin to choose as the representative…so, I went with the hottest: Jarrett Bush.

Packers WR vs Saints Secondary:

I picked a couple of newbies for this one.  There are other, more-experienced, guys to be had, but why not get a young one that you can train?? Grr.  I present to you Jordy Nelson for the Pack and Usama Young for the Saints.

Kickers:

FAIL.  Moving on…

Now that took the wind out of my sails. :)   I’ll probably watch tonight, just because I love football, and I think this will be a good game.  If I HAD to pick, I’d stick with the Pack.  Either way, I’ll be fine with the outcome.

The power of fear November 21, 2008

Fear is both a demotivator and a motivator.  It is healthy and unhealthy.  It can be fun (as in watching a scary movie or going to a haunted house) or it can be awful (as in waiting on the MRI scans for your friend with cancer).  I think I’ve read somewhere that it’s good to admit your fears – it might help you to get past them (if they’re that debilitating kind, for sure).  In that spirit, I have a confession:

I have fear.

It’s no phobia – very little can scare me that bad, I think.  But, today, I have two kinds of fear:  Fear of working out with my new trainer and fear of not being fit as I get older.

The fear of not being fit (read: not being healthy) as I get older really hit home this year.  I turned 30.  I know, 30 isn’t old, but that “milestone” of a birthday got me thinking about what I’d like to be doing with myself heading toward that next milestone.  I decided that being unfit – not really fat, but not skinny and certainly not fit – was one of my worst problems…and it has been for a while, but I guess I wasn’t ready to deal with it.  Now I am, and I am taking the proper steps (I hope).

Those proper steps start with calling up a friend of a friend who just happens to be a fitness trainer.  She’s fit – and looks damned good for her age – and I think she knows what she’s doing.  But, I have fear…I am afraid.  I’m afraid of the sure-to-happen pain and soreness.  I’m afraid of hurting myself on one of those contraptions that people use in the gym.  I’m afraid of looking like a total ass in the gym.

But, the fear of aging faster with my unfit self is greater, and that’s the fear that motivates me to treat myself better.  I think, once I get there and get going with the trainer’s help, I’ll be okay and that OTHER set of fears will fade.

I’m sure you’ll read more about this should you decide to stop by again.  In the meantime – a more positive thought (and one I’ll try to keep with me this evening):

Here’s my attempt at a brief post – it always seems to take me a long time to write these.  I either get distracted by people visiting the cube’o'doom or I’m looking up stuff to put in here.  There’s so much fodder on the main pages today, though, that I think I can do a decent job of busting this one out quick.  It also helps that I’ve got a shitload of things to accomplish today at work, and I’d like to get started on that pronto.  So, for your reading pleasure, I’ve created today’s Good, Bad, Ugly, and Funny list:

Good:  My head cold seems to either be going away, or the colder temps today have helped me feel better.  I’m starting a workout regimen – complete with trainer! – to help me get in better shape.  I’m not too terribly unfit, but I could use the help.  The Magical Fitness Tour starts tomorrow at 6pm.  Tony Romo is such a good kid.

Bad:  Adam “Pacman” Jones is back in the NFL and back with the Cowboys.  I’m all for giving people a second chance, but this seems to be a little ridiculous.  I wonder if he has some blackmailish pics of Roger Goodell…Tony Romo is still dating that stupid bimbo.  Jealousy?  Not really.  It’s more like wishing your guy friend had better taste.

Ugly:  READ THIS STORY.  Of course there has been no investigation yet, but this is absolute bullshit if it’s true.  It’s not just because he’s the father of one of the best WRs in the NFL, but it’s because he’s a human being and we all deserve to be treated better than that.

Funny:  Maybe it’s not only in Indiana, but that’s the first thought that crossed my mind when I read this headline:  “Ind. inmates sneak through ceiling to have sex”.  It’s proof that some people will really do it all for the nookie.  Also funny:  Ball State almost lost to who?  Oh, that’s right – Central Michigan.  I would have laughed my ass off – Go Chips!

I am fully aware that I do not usually speak kindly of the Indianapolis Colts.  As a team, I find them to be, well, less than appealing.  It’s mostly due to the ownership, a few of the more ridiculous fans (and all the fair-weather ones, too), and, yes, Peyton Manning.  However, I am adult enough to admit that the Clots have some excellent players.  There really is quite a bit of talent on their team; their overhyped, overpaid QB notwithstanding.  I have often said that if I were forced to wear a Clots jersey, it would have to be one of three current players:  Jeff Saturday (C), Adam Vinatieri (K), or Dallas Clark (TE).  What’s that?  Oh, no – I left Mike Hart off of here on purpose.  You know I love me some Michigan men, and Hart is no exception, but I cannot bear to think of him playing for the Dolts.  So, unless he becomes a major player for them, I’m going to pretend he’s not clad in royal and white.  I had to do the same for Braylon and the Browns…

Dallas Clark is an awesome guy, IMO.  This morning, I was scanning through the channels on the radio when I heard Dallas on one of the channels.  I stopped to listen, just because I think he’s got a great sense of humor, and was quickly reminded that the local radio-a-thon for the Make-A-Wish foundation starts tomorrow.  Since 2003 (I think), he’s been working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and participating in fundraisers here in Indy.  I don’t particularly like the main morning DJ on WZPL, Dave Smiley (it’s that stupid-on-purpose thing), but I think this is a noble cause and is probably the only time that I tolerate listening to him for more than about 5 straight minutes.

Anyway, Dallas will come onto the show sometime on Friday afternoon (this morning he said it would be after practice), and I just love to listen to him chat people up.  One year, Smiley was trying desperately to get Peyton Manning to call the show – not specifically for the Foundation fundraiser, but for the whole season.  It just wouldn’t happen.  During the Request-A-Thon, Dallas was giving an hand-delivered autographed jersey to someone who donated a big amount (I think it was $1000).  Shortly after he made that announcement, the phone rang, and Dallas quipped “Maybe that’s Peyton calling to get my jersey”.  That cracked me up and it showed his great sense of humor.  To my knowledge, Peyton still has not called and talked to Smiley – yet another reason he’s a giant douchebag.

This morning, Dallas – well, Smiley actually – broke the news that his wife is expecting.  He was such a good sport about everything and he was giving Smiley a rough time, I decided then that I was going to post about him this morning.  So, if you’re interested, donate to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for the WZPL Request-A-Thon (you can do it on the phone (317) 228-1099  or (866) 995-WISH or online here)…I plan on it, but I may just wait for Dallas Clark to be on the air. ;-)

Many days, okay every day, my salvation at work comes in the form of my mp3 player.  I plug it into my desktop, plug in my Skullcandy Ink’d earbuds, and ignore the rest of the office.  It’s nice, because before I came to this place, I’d never worked in a cube farm before.  I would go absolutely insane if I had to listen to all the chatter and worthless conversation around me all day long, all week long.  These earbuds have the gel speaker covers that fit well into my ears and do a decent job of blocking out noise.

This morning, like all mornings, I went to plug in and ignore everyone else, and all I get is mono.  My first thought is WTF?? and I spend a few minutes messing with the connectors, adjusting the volume, changing songs, and jiggling wires to try and remedy the situation.  No luck.  I take the earphones over to someone else’s computer to see if it’s that – nope.

Now, I know that these Ink’d buds aren’t the best ones going.  SkullCandy doesn’t even sell these on their website, and they make some that look really awesome, but I got these as a gift and I know the giver didn’t have a lot of $ to spend.  Fair enough – and these are great for what I need them for.  I probably don’t even use them to their “fullest potential”,  whatever that is, so really nice ones might be lost on me.

I sent SkullCandy a warranty request email and am awaiting their reply.  It seems, from their website, that they will probably take care of it with no problem.  I guess though, that it means I’ll be without headphones while they get a replacement/repaired pair to me.  That blows.  I have a decent pair of standard headphones at home, so maybe I’ll bring those in and deal with the hugeness of them for a week or so.

Today I will force myself to deal with the monophone.  It will still be better than listening to all these people around here. :)

Good:  The day’s already half over.  Next week’s a short week.

Bad:  Mono earphones.  Worse is no earphones at all.

Ugly:  Go to Google.  Type “Walmart sucks” into the box.  Press “I’m feeling lucky” button.  Read and enjoy, especially if you hate WackoMart.

Funny:  Go here; get your laugh on.

Schadenfreude (n) – satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else’s misfortune

Yeah, that's right. (Photo: Chicago Tribune)

Boy, do I love it when the Packers win.  It’s even better when it’s a big win, and it’s almost the tops when it’s a big win against the Bears.  Because we all know, the Bears Still Suck.

Not a terrible weekend – I survived the onslaught of small children and near-constant talk about those children.  I did have a good quip that the tornado must have picked up the Wicked Witch and dropped her right in the middle of MunchkinLand.  All in all, it wasn’t awful.  I just didn’t have a lot of fun.

College Football:  Michigan showed that they still don’t have it all together by losing to Northwestern on Saturday – a game I couldn’t bear to watch.  I’m just glad I was reasonable enough to think that last week’s drubbing of Minnesota was not much more than good luck at the right time.  Perhaps a little favor from the Football Gods?

NFL:  Pro football had my adopted hometown’s team winning one in Kansas City, the ViQueens losing to the Bucs, and, of course, my beloved Pack trampling the Bears 37-3.

Chicago Tribune)

Oh, we suck. (Photo: Chicago Tribune)

Of course, it can’t be all a bed of roses.  The Dolts beat the Texans and have to head to San Diego next weekend to face the Chargers.  I’ll be a Bolts fan for a day (Bolts vs Dolts is a great tagline, I think).  The Yets beat the Patriots in OT.  I still say that the Pats are the better team…the Yets are relatively healthy and it STILL took them 4 quarters plus OT to pull it out by a field goal.  Had the coin toss in OT gone differently, it would probably be a different result on the scoreboard.

The Titans were able to manufacture a win against a Crohn’s-disease fighting David Garrard (is anyone else tired of seeing that ad?) to remain undefeated.  10 – 0.  I’ll laugh my ass off if they get beaten by the Liedowns on Thanksgiving.

In odd football news, the Eggles and Bungles played to a tie.  A tie?  Of all goofy crap, it had to come from these two teams.  The Eagles, despite being 5-4-1 on the season play worse (gasp!) than (eek!) Detroit.  The Bengals, despite…oh, wait…they’re 1-8-1.  Yeah, that’s about right, even with all the hype they got in the preseason.  One to watch, huh?  Yep.

MLB:  In the big-money department, CC Sabathia has been offered $140M to play for the Yanks.  Holy shit.  140 million dollars?  And then this is what I read about it:

While the Yankees’ initial offer to Sabathia is significant, sources indicate that he almost certainly will not accept it.

Say what?  Is he holding out for a contract worth the national debt?  For the love of a divine being, $140 million is more money than I could spend.  Maybe.  If he doesn’t take it, who’s he waiting on?  A Saudi prince?

The Braves are no longer going for Jake Peavy, but apparently the Yanks are scooping up free agents like they’ve got the dosh to do it, and Peavy’s being looked at.  Does that mean that the Cubs aren’t going for him either?  If the Yanks are willing to dish that kid of dough in the direction of players, other clubs won’t want to keep up with the Steinbrenners.

Nick Swisher was traded to New York, and the ChiSox also traded out Uribe.  I know we’re looking for youth and speed here, Mr. Williams, but we need some good veteran leadership as well.  Moving Alexi to SS might work out…he IS fast.

In other assorted stuff of interest, the Red Wings won, and my desire to be more into hockey this season has petered off.  It’s hard when football takes so much effort to support and now I’m interested in the hot stove for baseball.  I just gotta know where some of these guys go after all the trades are made!

Thursday Night Football November 13, 2008

I have yet to decide whether I like Thursday Night Football or not.  I love football, and I don’t often have things going on on Thursdays, so it seems like it could be an okay night for football.  Friday nights are obvs reserved for the HS circuit as far as the game is concerned, so that’s out.  I like MNF because it’s an extension of the weekend’s football frenzy, winding out with one last (usually decent) game.  But Thursday night?  It’s separated from the weekend…and even college weeknight games are lower Division teams that I’m not particularly concerned with.  Hell, even Butler plays on the weekend, and they’re in the Pioneer League for football.

Regardless, tonight’s NFL game is the Patriots versus the Yets.  I doubt that I’ll watch much of the game because we actually have plans this evening, but it’s interesting to me the level of hype this is getting.  It’s a “Battle for AFC East Supremacy”…both teams are at 6-3 on the season to date.  It’s also:

Matt Cassel vs Brett Favre

He’s 6′4″, 230 lbs (really?), and 26.  Matt’s not doing too badly with the modified offense that the Pats have devised.  It’s sorta like when Hottie Tom Brady took over for an injured Drew Bledsoe a few years ago.  Change a few things here and there on the approach to the offense, and you’ve got a working plan.  Matt has an equal number of TDs and INTs, and his passer rating is 84.2, which isn’t too bad for his starting season.

He’s 6′2″, 222 lbs, and 39.  Brett’s still Brett, regardless of where he’s playing.  He’s got 16 TDs and 12 INTs, with a passer rating of 89.8.  He plays with that sort of reckless abandon that endears him to many, but also makes him quite off-putting to others.  He’s a natural at the leadership of a team, and is feeling comfy with his new team, which might be his edge against Matt Cassel.  Well, that, and a few years as starting QB under his belt.

Bill Belichick vs Eric Mangini

I’m not putting pictures of these two up.  They’re both ugly, IMHO, and I refuse to post ugly photos.  Most of my sports guys are at least semi-attractive.  The rivalry resides mostly here, I think, what with the Mangina doing the whole Spygate deal.  That was, in all likelihood, retaliation for past abuses from Belichick.  Belichick does a rotten interview, but the man is a damned fine head coach.  I think he’s inside his players’ heads on the best level and can get them to perform to their fullest.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis vs the Yets run defense

I think I read that the Yets have the #3 run defense in the league.  The Pats have dug deep into their charts to get BenJarvus onto the center stage – they’ve had to with injuries to starter Laurence Maroney and back-up Sammy Morris.  This match-up may be a wash, forcing the Pats to go more to the air; I see a lot of screens and short dump passes in the future.

Randy Moss/Wes Welker vs Ty Law

I like Randy Moss.  I may be in the majority here, but I think he’s a good player.  Sure, he’s a diva, but lots of WRs are.  Wes Welker doesn’t seem to be a diva, and those blue eyes are something, aren’t they?  Regardless, these two are seasoned pros, and they’re there to help out their QB.  They make awesome catches, and may be able to provide some options for Belichick’s offense against the Yets’ defense.  Welker has a new record in number of catches in consecutive gains and one, I think, for yardage after catch.

I also like Ty Law.  Duh, he’s a Michigan man, and he’s a good cornerback.  He used to play for the Pats, and I have this nagging feeling that he was picked up (on Monday, no less) to provide a little metal annoyance for the Pats.  He hasn’t been active in the NFL yet this year, and that at least has to make you wonder about him being rusty.

The Yets are coming off a win over the hapless Rams, and the Pats are off a win over Buffalo.  The last time they met, the Pats beat the Yets in Matt’s Week 2 start – mostly due to a small bit of luck.  This time, Matt’s got a few games and little bit more comfort with his team, but the Yets have Brett.

I think the Pats will win…hopefully this NFL week goes better than my last one.

Good:  I have the NFL Network at home, so I can catch parts of the game.  Work is busy, so after I post this, I won’t be bored for the rest of the day.  Cake’s Comfort Eagle.  Cutie 1B Adam Boeve is on the roster for the Indianapolis Indians.

Bad:  I confirmed today that Super Hottie Matt Kata is free agent within the league system, and I can only hope that he comes back to Indy.  I’ve got to hold out for a bit to see where he lands.  This Hot Stove season has my attention as the ChiSox have some serious rumors swirling about.  I guess we’ll see what happens.

Ugly:  I really, really, really don’t want to go away this weekend.  I do like our friends, but I have no desire to hang out with all of them and their children in one house for an entire weekend.  I also have no desire to hang out with women who have none of the same interests as me – not a single one of them likes sports – and they only want to talk about their kids.

Funny:  This article.  How sad…and true.

I have such a bad attitude about work today.  I think it’s because I had yesterday off, so I had the equivalent of two Mondays.  I know, I know – stop bitching about having Veterans’ Day off.  I’m not whining about having the day off, nor would I in any way downplay the significance of the reason for the Federal Holiday, but coming in today was like pulling teeth.  I left from the house 15 minutes late, but I got here on time.  I’ve been harassed and harangued to go to this stupid awards ceremony that work is holding…

Let’s break this down.  First: Veterans’ Day.  I am a staunch supporter of our troops – deployed, stationed overseas in peaceful countries, stationed here at home, training, at rest, on leave, and – most importantly – home to stay.  My heart breaks for each report of troops we’ve lost.  If not for these exceptionally brave people, I couldn’t get on here and piss and moan about all the stuff I have/don’t have.  In fact, I would probably have a lot more to bitch about if not for them.  My deepest gratitude to our military personnel and their families.  We wouldn’t be who we are (good, bad, or otherwise) without you.  Thank you for doing what I couldn’t.

Now, work.  We have these “employee awards” once a year.  They’re supposed to recognize our peers.  In fact, the premise is solid:  coworkers nominate each other for jobs well done, major accomplishments, and great ideas.  That’s where the good stuff ends.  After the nomination forms are completed, they’re sent to a committee – not of peers, mind you – but of high-ranking people who a) don’t know shit about what they’re reading and b) bend to political pressures.  So, it’s a favorites game not necessarily based on accomplishments or exceedingly good work, but on who jumps higher when told.  It might be obvious, but I am not one of those folks.  Thus, I’m still here at my desk – working, actually, while I write this little post.

And, speaking of work, I should get right back to that. (cough, cough)

Good:  Amazingly enough, Mike Singletary decided to try and punch in the game-winning score with a run play at the goal line.  The Cardinals held up and kept the 49ers from a win.  So, something in football worked out the way I wanted it to.

Bad:  It’s too early to freak out about Minor League Baseball, but I checked the website for the Indianapolis Indians on Monday, and Super Hottie Matt Kata is not listed on the roster for 2009.  True, a whole lot of guys aren’t on there (we currently have no manager, no hitting coach, 6 pitchers, 3 1B, no 2B, 1 3B, no catcher, and no RF), but…who am I going to ogle if he’s not there??

Ugly:  This post at MGoBlog.  This totally fucks with my Christmas shopping, I swear.  Consider this some preemptive negative publicity for RichRobots…bastards.  Boo!!

Funny:  The Stupid Idiot Guy from Monday’s post (re: Ben Roethlisberger) is an even bigger moron than advertised.  This morning, he said that he was all confused with his bank account balance – it was quite a bit larger than it should have been – until he saw that his paycheck was pending and his balance already included it.  He’s been here for a while now – that shit doesn’t just change; it happens every two weeks.  And, he was wearing a Mr. Rogers-grade cardigan and a white belt.  I nearly blew coffee out my nose when I saw his outfit.

I am so mean. :)
