watch the basketball games and still get work done today?  Well, if you’re a lucky sucker like the DH, you can work from home: chillin’ on the couch in front of the TV with the laptop – yep – on your lap.  All you have to do is fend off the Pet’O'Doom (he likes to lay on your most important papers or on the laptop in your lap)…and not ignore your boss when he IMs you during free throws.

Unfortunately, I am not that lucky.  I have to be at work today, so I’m looking to devise a strategy.  Worse yet, we have a meeting at 2:30, which should be the end of the Butler/LSU game this afternoon.  Damn!  That means I can try to snag a feed for the first half+ and then force the DH to text me updates so I can keep up during the presentation.  It seems to be the logical way to go about it.  Now about finding that feed that isn’t blocked at work…

Since I’ve already posted my first round picks, I’ll go ahead and post my second-round winners.  I will be in The Mitten all weekend, and will most likely be unable to watch the games or post here.  So Monday will have to be a recap on how I did and the predictors for the end of next week.

Second Round:

  • Louisville
  • Wake Forest
  • WVU
  • MSU (Sparty NO!!)

West

I’m so unoriginal March 16, 2009

There are times when I’d like to think I’m creative and a whiz with words.  This is not one of those times.

The weekend went well.  I think I was still recovering from the flu because I got so tired while working out on Saturday morning I had to quit early.  I made it through the free-weight circuit, but couldn’t drag myself to work on my abs or do cardio afterwards.  I have to try and make sure to get on that with today’s workout.  No more wussing out!

Unoriginal is probably a good way to describe my college basketball picks on the bracket this year too.  I made my choices, not so much based on research and the like, but more on gut feeling and what I’ve heard throughout the season in little bits and pieces.  I’m not counting on it for money, so it’s okay by me.  Here’s the list of my First Round winners:

Midwest

  • Lousiville
  • Siena
  • Arizona
  • Wake Forest
  • WVU
  • Kansas
  • BC
  • MSU

West

  • UConn
  • Texas A&M
  • Purdue
  • Washington
  • Marquette
  • Missouri
  • Maryland
  • Memphis

East

  • Pitt
  • Tennessee
  • FSU
  • Xavier
  • UCLA
  • ‘Nova
  • TX
  • Duke

South

  • UNC
  • Butler
  • Illinois
  • Gonzaga
  • Temple
  • Syracuse
  • Michigan
  • OK

Since tourney time is upon us, the days of trying to work without having all the scores up are quite over.  Well, starting on Thursday, and I have Friday off.  That’s a good thing about football – it’s always on at night and usually it’s on the weekend.  Baseball is on during the week and during the day, but it’s easy to check on a game a few times here and there without feeling like you’re missing out.  Not so much with basketball.

Hockey update – the Red Wings defeated Rick Nash and the Columbus Blue Jackets to secure a spot in the postseason.  There’s also something about them making a record, but I forget where I heard that and what it actually is.  Update: from their own website, the record is nine consecutive seasons with 100 points.

I should get back to work, so I’ve got a goodie for you:

Yeesh.  I was out for three days with the flu, and it wiped me right out.  I won’t go into details – it’s totally freaking gross – but trust in the fact that I didn’t crawl myself off the couch much the past few days.

I tried to come up with something great for my 100th post.  Yep, this is it!  100!  I guess I’m still not too much like my usual self because I’m just more about chillin’ here in the Cube’o'Doom, trying to get caught up.  I thought about 100 hot guys…100 hot athletes…100 fun things about me…but why burn it up?  I can use those ideas for 150 or 200 or 1K posts.  I’m just not feeling it today.

Not feelin’ it also describes how Spring Training seems to be going.  I know, it’s just Spring Training, but you would think that these guys would either A) need to prove themselves to get on the team (MATT KATA, I’m talking to you, Hot Stuff) or B) need to prove themselves so they don’t get lost at the depths of platooning the bench.  Side note of sorta-stalkerishness:  Tomorrow is Super Hottie Matt Kata’s birthday.  Hope it’s great, Matt!   Let’s see:  Joe Mauer’s hurt (more/again), Joe Crede is playing for the Twinkies, and Manny finally got a contract.  Maybe we just need to get through the World Baseball Classic (yawn) and get on to the “real” season.  Opening day for the Indianapolis Indians is April 9, and I plan to be there.  Probably freezing my ass off. :D

College basketball is about to reach its frenzied peak.  The Ben Televen Tournament is in town this weekend, so there’s a good festive feel about the area.  The Butler Bulldogs sucked it up against a really desperate Cleveland State team on Wednesday night (I think - I was dozing on the couch between the DH’s fits during the game and those three days have all run together.).  I’m ready to get my bracket together, but it’s going to be a wild tournament this year…a total scrapfest, and it’s going to be great!  Maybe I’ll figure out a way to post my bracket on here.  That way, we can all make fun of me when I screw it up.

It’s pretty much football doldrums, but you know I’m gonna find that story that makes a certain QB I don’t like look more like an ass than the horseface he is.  Check it out here.  Don’t worry – they still don’t like you because you picked Tennessee over Ole Miss anyway.  Dicksmack.

Hockey is ongoing, and not too terribly.  The Wings are at 44-15 and lead the conference with 97 points.  Losing in an OT shootout doesn’t help the W-L, but it does give us points.  In very, very sad hockey news, I’d like to have a moment of silence for the late Colleen Howe, wife of Gordie, who passed away Friday at the age of 76.

Thanks.

I’m still playing catch-up, so I’ll have to leave you with these lovely reminder of why spring is so great.

  1. March Madness
  2. The weather is getting warmer (which leads to #3)
  3. The firefighters are back to running on the canal.  I shall have to bring in a camera.

A new post in which I can’t come up with a snappy title February 16, 2009

Some days it’s hard enough to come up with something coherent to write down, let alone a nifty little title that might grab your attention.  Some days I can’t do either, and so I don’t post at all.

I am in a mood today, I tell ya.  I’m feeling snappy and snarky.  I shouldn’t  – had a good weekend and got plenty of sleep last night – but I do.  That being said, I have few things to discuss so the nebulous annoyance I’m chillin’ in doesn’t infiltrate EVERYTHING I do today.

Butler Basketball:  Went to the game at Hinkle yesterday, and watched a heartbreaker.  It was a crazy sort of day…the Dawgs got behind at the very beginning of the game and never got it back.  It seemed for the most part that they couldn’t break a 9-point deficit.  We’d score and get within 10, and Loyola (the Ramblers…wonder what their mascot looks like) would go and score a 3 to put us back down.  The game had a pause late in the second half – a little girl went missing within Hinkle and both teams agreed to chill until she was found.  The kid was 3…scary for the parents that she wandered off or whatever.

I’ve said before about these boys being so young…freshmen and sophomores, mostly, and they are going to be great as they mature and stop taking every open three they think they see.  It was awful at times.  it was also great at times.  College basketball is nothing if it isn’t a show of heart and determination.  It’s from the players all the way up to the coaches…and it’s awesome.

Indiana Ice:  For kicks, the DH and I decided to go to the hockey game for Valentine’s Day.  We got some really great seats, but I had forgotten that the Ice have fallen so far.  When I was younger, they were considered the “farm team” for the Chicago Blackhawks, and so the guys were older, a bit more practiced, and totally appropriate for athlete crushes.  Now, they’re a super low level team that might be appropriate for college scouting.  Do they even have farm teams in hockey anymore?  Well, I know they won’t be harvesting any of our boys for a while yet.  Do I need to say that the Ice lost?

There was no structure – no defenders, centers, nothing – you either were a goalie or you weren’t.  There was a glove-dropping, helmets-off, sweater-yanking fistfight in the first 5 minutes.   There are some fundamentals that are seriously lacking:  passing was bad, receiving the puck was ridiculous, and it seemed that the guys couldn’t pay attention to who was on their team – many a pass went to a defender beautifully.  The Ice had better than 40 shots on goal and 2 scores.  The Des Moines Buccaneers (they have Buccaneers in Des Moines??) had less than 30 shots on goal and 3 scores.  In the first period, I think they had 2 scores for 6 shots.

Insanity, I say.  Stick to the basics, stick to the basics!

Anyway, I’m going to do actual work.  No really.  I won’t just be scouring the internet for hot athletes.  Well, not JUST. :)

Good:  Had a great Valentine’s weekend with the DH.

Bad:  Hottie Joe Mauer is restricted here at the beginning of Spring Training because of some surgery done to remove a kidney blockage.  He’s fine (no shit), but needs to take it easy for a bit.

Ugly:  The fans at the hockey game were all sorts of white trash.  I know, I’m a judgemental bitch, but really.  I saw more chick mullets than I’d seen in a long time.  I don’t know WTF that mascot is supposed to be, and those folks were just mean.  They cursed openly in front of kids at the players and shouted for their team to “rip his head off!” and to “punch his face in!”.  Wow.

Funny:  Some of Chris Cooley’s thoughts and observations about the Pro Bowl…plus that story and video of Larry Fitzgerald leaving him hanging on a celebration are great.  Check it out here.

Or just plain disasterous for the Packers?  I think it’s both.  I said I’d be okay with whoever won, and I am…overall.  I just hate seeing the Packers play like it doesn’t matter; or as PackerAaron says “It’s really hard to watch a Packers team that has no heart.”  Sigh.

Anyway, I’m pretty excited for the upcoming weekend.  I have a busy day tomorrow, but I think it will get me in gear.  Today has been totally and inexplicably hellish at work, and now I just don’t want to do anything.  What does this girl do when she doesn’t want to work??  Check out sports stuff, of course!

  • The Pittsburgh Pirates must have the oddest organization in the league.  The As had the whole “MoneyBall” idea, but the Pirates are going a different direction by signing two guys out of India that participated in a baseball-related reality show.  Totally random, I know.
  • College basketball is underway, and since the college team I care about for football has met this season’s demise already, I’m going to start paying attention to that.  Oh, and the BCS sucks.
    • Pur-don’t is sitting at #10 in MSN’s power rankings currently.  Really?
    • Worse: Sparty is sitting at #5.
    • IU lost to Notre Dame (chuckle, snort).  No wonder the folks around here are so quiet about basketball right now.
  • Oh How I Hate Ohio State – I didn’t need a news story to tell me that.
  • DId I mention that the BCS sucks?
  • I wonder how many Titans fans will be at the game on Thursday with us?  I’m wearing something noncommittal, since I care not about either team.
  • Hottie Sportswriter Michael Silver writes this in his 32 Questions:”32. Detroit Lions: If you insist upon watching all four quarters of their game against the Titans on Thursday, how much do you hate talking to your in-laws?”  My answer is that I don’t hate my in-laws, but they’re not even doing anything until after the game is over anyway! ;-)
  • The Minnesota Twins are sporting some throwback jerseys this coming season, but only on Saturdays at the Met-ro-d(r)ome.  Glen Perkins said it’s a nice break from the pinstripes.  He must not like ogling looking at Joe Mauer:
Mmmm...pinstripes AND eyeblack!

Mmmm...pinstripes AND eyeblack!

Now I have to attend a meeting.  I’m going there with thoughts of Hottie Joe Mauer to keep me entertained.  Here’s another picture of him for you – the Not-So-Random Hot Guy Pic:
