’cause this football season is done.  Okay, so it’s not OVER, but it’s done.  The Packers are done, what with their miserable showing against the Shaguars, and I’m pretty sure that the Saints were done at least two weeks ago.  Even the Cardinals, who last week won the NFC Worst, got trampled by the ViQueens.  Hell, Hottie Matt Leinart got to play.  Sigh.

All that’s left is ogling the hot players, rooting AGAINST teams, and…uh, ogling hot players. :)   I do have to say that I *love* the sarcasm over at Cheesehead TV.  What else can we do?

That rooting against teams came in handy yesterday – I rooted against the Giants, which turned out nicely for me, and against the Colts, which didn’t.  I still say that if the Colts are having that much trouble against a team such as Detroit, they’re not going to get far in the post-season.  Well, unless there’s a giant fluke, and Peyton gets his wish granted from the God of All Things Unholy.  It could happen (see Super Bowl XLI).

I have to give an ovation to Matt Cassell.  Six(!) days after losing his father, he throws four TD passes in the Pats’ rout of the Raiders.  I’d be a total freaking mess for at least a month if I’d lost my dad – he’s out there being chased around by linebackers six days later.  Amazing.

I watched the majority of the Butler basketball game vs Oh How I Hate Ohio State.  I am constantly impressed with how those boys (and yes, they are boys – I am so old) can play ball and come from behind like they did.  It was almost an upset victory…almost.  The team is pretty much freshmen and sophomores, and they’re pretty decent now, just wait until next year.

In hockey “news”, the Dallas Stars say that they’re g’done with Sean Avery, when he comes off of NHL suspension.  All this for saying that other players must really like his “sloppy seconds”.  If he hadn’t of used that particular term, this would have been a non-issue.  If he had said “other guys must really like the girls I used to date”, this would not be news.  But, it’s Avery, and he’s gotta make a splash.  Now the ice is cracking under him – at least as far as the very conservative Stars are concerned.  Now the question is where he’ll land after his suspension from the League is up…I understand that the Columbus Blue-Jackets could use a big-draw name…

Speaking of hockey – I really want to go to the Winter Classic.  And I really want one of these sweet Detroit shirts:

And now that I’m done bitching about sports, I should go do work.  It’s time for…………………..

I gotta tell ya, this was a crappy, CRAPPY weekend for football.  Well, at least it was for me.  Worse, I managed to catch a cold and have it manifest itself over me on Thursday night, abuse me on Friday, totally kick my ass on Saturday, and barely let me rest all weekend.  No, I am NOT done whining. :-p

The Packers are killing me a slow and painful death.  How is it exactly that we put up so many points and still lose?  I know the answers, but they’re still so distasteful (like, hey, the defense sux worse than your mother’s Hoover) that I refuse to believe it just yet.  Aaron Rodgers – I still love you, but clutch you aren’t.  Not yet.  I promise to give you time.  Derrick Frost might want to go incognito around Green Bay, as many Cheeseheads are calling for his head on a platter.

The Saints lost as well, and, uh, to quote Forrest Gump, “that’s all I got to say about that”.

The Dolts managed to win a really stupid and ugly game against the Browns.  While having a discussion today about that game, a sign of fan desperation flew:  When I asked what the hell happened in that game, the fan shrugged and said “a win is still a win”.  While I suppose that sentiment is true – ugly and stupid wins still do get  a mark in the W column – being able to barely pull it out over the Browns does not bode well for this team and any future hopes for this season.

For the Indianapolis Indians, several of the players have been added to the Pirates’ 40-man roster so they can be protected in the Rule V draft coming up on the 11th.  Other than that, I have no idea what’s going on out there with the free agent players.  I’m still learning this whole system, so be patient with me (or explain it to me – please!).  I do know that former Indians’ manager Trent Jewett is going to manage the Minor League team for the Washington Nationals, and the Pirates have moved up a manager from the lower minors to be the hitting coach at Indy.  A big thanks to Nancy at MVN and Jenifer at MLB.com for keeping up to date on the moves so I can at least be somewhat informed.::-)

Last thing since I have work to do today:  The DH and I went to the slaughter of the Lions on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit.  It was a good game for laughs, and for a few brief sparks of amazement.  Here’s a few observations for you:

  1. It’s really sad to see that some players that could be really great are the quickly dimming bright spots in the black hole that is the Lions’ organization.  I wonder how these guys manage to stay motivated.
  2. Tennessee’s main punt returner, CB Chris Carr is fast.  Watching him run back punts was pretty dang fun.  Chris Johnson isn’t a slowpoke either.
  3. I think Kyle Vanden Bosch has a fun name to say.  So does Ikaika Alama-Francis.
  4. How sad/great is it that the fans CHEER to hear “Now starting at quarterback for the Lions, Drew Henson”?
  5. Is it just me, or does Daunte look scared?  I swear that he second-guessed more passes and plays…not what I expected from a veteran like him.
  6. Ford Field is quite nice, and the staff was so friendly – a big thanks to Detriot for being great hosts for the weekend.  We got some nostalgia flowing from all those people/places that we just don’t have here in Indy.

Or just plain disasterous for the Packers?  I think it’s both.  I said I’d be okay with whoever won, and I am…overall.  I just hate seeing the Packers play like it doesn’t matter; or as PackerAaron says “It’s really hard to watch a Packers team that has no heart.”  Sigh.

Anyway, I’m pretty excited for the upcoming weekend.  I have a busy day tomorrow, but I think it will get me in gear.  Today has been totally and inexplicably hellish at work, and now I just don’t want to do anything.  What does this girl do when she doesn’t want to work??  Check out sports stuff, of course!

  • The Pittsburgh Pirates must have the oddest organization in the league.  The As had the whole “MoneyBall” idea, but the Pirates are going a different direction by signing two guys out of India that participated in a baseball-related reality show.  Totally random, I know.
  • College basketball is underway, and since the college team I care about for football has met this season’s demise already, I’m going to start paying attention to that.  Oh, and the BCS sucks.
    • Pur-don’t is sitting at #10 in MSN’s power rankings currently.  Really?
    • Worse: Sparty is sitting at #5.
    • IU lost to Notre Dame (chuckle, snort).  No wonder the folks around here are so quiet about basketball right now.
  • Oh How I Hate Ohio State – I didn’t need a news story to tell me that.
  • DId I mention that the BCS sucks?
  • I wonder how many Titans fans will be at the game on Thursday with us?  I’m wearing something noncommittal, since I care not about either team.
  • Hottie Sportswriter Michael Silver writes this in his 32 Questions:”32. Detroit Lions: If you insist upon watching all four quarters of their game against the Titans on Thursday, how much do you hate talking to your in-laws?”  My answer is that I don’t hate my in-laws, but they’re not even doing anything until after the game is over anyway! ;-)
  • The Minnesota Twins are sporting some throwback jerseys this coming season, but only on Saturdays at the Met-ro-d(r)ome.  Glen Perkins said it’s a nice break from the pinstripes.  He must not like ogling looking at Joe Mauer:
Mmmm...pinstripes AND eyeblack!

Mmmm...pinstripes AND eyeblack!

Now I have to attend a meeting.  I’m going there with thoughts of Hottie Joe Mauer to keep me entertained.  Here’s another picture of him for you – the Not-So-Random Hot Guy Pic:

You are aware that I am only previewing this MNF game because it is my two favorite teams.  I will not root for either team, and I will not care who wins (although I did pick the Pack in my fantasy thingie – by 3).  I love these two teams.  There’s something about teams with heart, and their associated cities/fan bases with similar heart, that I just…well, HEART.  I thought about doing this post last week, but wanted to wait until today – relevance, you know – and I hope I can keep it on a smooth path.  And awwwaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy we go!

The QB Litmus:

Saints RB vs Packers LB:

Reggie isn’t playing, and Deuce just isn’t hot.  So, instead, I’ll preview rookie Mike Bell for the Saints.  He (and Deuce) will be up against a D-Line that’s just so-so at stopping the run.  I picked a LB to represent the run-stop…Desmond Bishop.

Packers RB vs Saints LB:

When he’s actually doing his job, Ryan Grant may be worth his money.  It took him (and apparently, Coach McCarthy) about halfway into the season to get the running game going again.  I picked Saints LB Scott Shanle to rep that team – because he’s the best looking LB, duh.

Saints WR vs Packers Secondary:

The #1 passing offense versus the awesome Packers secondary.  I don’t think I have to introduce the WR I’ll be using.  :-)   However, it’s a tough time picking one of the guys on the other side of the coin to choose as the representative…so, I went with the hottest: Jarrett Bush.

Packers WR vs Saints Secondary:

I picked a couple of newbies for this one.  There are other, more-experienced, guys to be had, but why not get a young one that you can train?? Grr.  I present to you Jordy Nelson for the Pack and Usama Young for the Saints.

Kickers:

FAIL.  Moving on…

Now that took the wind out of my sails. :)   I’ll probably watch tonight, just because I love football, and I think this will be a good game.  If I HAD to pick, I’d stick with the Pack.  Either way, I’ll be fine with the outcome.

Schadenfreude (n) – satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else’s misfortune

Yeah, that's right. (Photo: Chicago Tribune)

Boy, do I love it when the Packers win.  It’s even better when it’s a big win, and it’s almost the tops when it’s a big win against the Bears.  Because we all know, the Bears Still Suck.

Not a terrible weekend – I survived the onslaught of small children and near-constant talk about those children.  I did have a good quip that the tornado must have picked up the Wicked Witch and dropped her right in the middle of MunchkinLand.  All in all, it wasn’t awful.  I just didn’t have a lot of fun.

College Football:  Michigan showed that they still don’t have it all together by losing to Northwestern on Saturday – a game I couldn’t bear to watch.  I’m just glad I was reasonable enough to think that last week’s drubbing of Minnesota was not much more than good luck at the right time.  Perhaps a little favor from the Football Gods?

NFL:  Pro football had my adopted hometown’s team winning one in Kansas City, the ViQueens losing to the Bucs, and, of course, my beloved Pack trampling the Bears 37-3.

Chicago Tribune)

Oh, we suck. (Photo: Chicago Tribune)

Of course, it can’t be all a bed of roses.  The Dolts beat the Texans and have to head to San Diego next weekend to face the Chargers.  I’ll be a Bolts fan for a day (Bolts vs Dolts is a great tagline, I think).  The Yets beat the Patriots in OT.  I still say that the Pats are the better team…the Yets are relatively healthy and it STILL took them 4 quarters plus OT to pull it out by a field goal.  Had the coin toss in OT gone differently, it would probably be a different result on the scoreboard.

The Titans were able to manufacture a win against a Crohn’s-disease fighting David Garrard (is anyone else tired of seeing that ad?) to remain undefeated.  10 – 0.  I’ll laugh my ass off if they get beaten by the Liedowns on Thanksgiving.

In odd football news, the Eggles and Bungles played to a tie.  A tie?  Of all goofy crap, it had to come from these two teams.  The Eagles, despite being 5-4-1 on the season play worse (gasp!) than (eek!) Detroit.  The Bengals, despite…oh, wait…they’re 1-8-1.  Yeah, that’s about right, even with all the hype they got in the preseason.  One to watch, huh?  Yep.

MLB:  In the big-money department, CC Sabathia has been offered $140M to play for the Yanks.  Holy shit.  140 million dollars?  And then this is what I read about it:

While the Yankees’ initial offer to Sabathia is significant, sources indicate that he almost certainly will not accept it.

Say what?  Is he holding out for a contract worth the national debt?  For the love of a divine being, $140 million is more money than I could spend.  Maybe.  If he doesn’t take it, who’s he waiting on?  A Saudi prince?

The Braves are no longer going for Jake Peavy, but apparently the Yanks are scooping up free agents like they’ve got the dosh to do it, and Peavy’s being looked at.  Does that mean that the Cubs aren’t going for him either?  If the Yanks are willing to dish that kid of dough in the direction of players, other clubs won’t want to keep up with the Steinbrenners.

Nick Swisher was traded to New York, and the ChiSox also traded out Uribe.  I know we’re looking for youth and speed here, Mr. Williams, but we need some good veteran leadership as well.  Moving Alexi to SS might work out…he IS fast.

In other assorted stuff of interest, the Red Wings won, and my desire to be more into hockey this season has petered off.  It’s hard when football takes so much effort to support and now I’m interested in the hot stove for baseball.  I just gotta know where some of these guys go after all the trades are made!

In what might have been my worst NFL day ever, I cringed at the play of my favorite/favored teams.  In fact, there are only two – yes, two – saving graces for my weekend as far as sports go:

1 – MICHIGAN FOOTBALL:  Before Saturday, I was not so hopeful about this game.  Well, before halftime, I was not so hopeful about this game (see how the game vs Penn St went down).  Where’d this team come from?  And who knew (not MGoBlog, and certainly not I) that Nick Sheridan would not suck on a major league level?  Huh.

2 – NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS:  They beat the Bills.  I’m still sorta impressed by Matt Cassell.  He’s no Tom Brady, but he’s not totally Hoovering this season either.  This is the only professional team that I wanted to win that actually lived up to my expectations.  No, seriously.

I guess there’s still Monday Night Football wherein the Arizona Cardinals take on the San Francisco 49ers.  I’d call the Cards for the win, but with the way my picks went this weekend, I’m not saying anything.

Good:  Michigan won!  By a lot!  The Pats won.  I only  have to work three days this week!  Will Blackmon’s punt return in the Green Bay- Minnesota game (which was awesome, FWIW).  The Green Bay secondary.

Bad: The Packers lost to the damned ViQueens, even after Gus Frerotte threw THREE interceptions/the Packers offense.  Mason Crosby’s going to start getting the same punishment that Martin Grammatica was getting.  The Steelers screwed around and fucked it up against the Clots.  The Towels weren’t the only things terrible yesterday in that game.  The Saints lost and I don’t want to talk any more about it.

Ugly:  The Packers play the Bears next weekend.  This makes me feel ill after the way we played this weekend.  I want the Patriots to stuff the Yets on Thursday – in a big, bad, ugly way.

Funny:  I got a good laugh from one of the annoying people here at work: He says, loudly, that he “hates” Ben Roethlisberger, and if he ever met him, he’d punch him in the face.  Now, this guy is maybe 5′9″, 130 lbs, maybe.  I asked over the cube wall if I heard him correctly.  He said yes, and I laughed.  I told him I’d like to see that one.  He says (and I do quote) “He’s not that big”.  I laughed again.  I checked on NFL.com to make sure, but Big Ben is 6′5″ and 245 lbs. What a freaking moron. He then solidified his “moron” status by proudly declaring that he’s a Bengals fan.

Check out this post.  NaNoWriMo, huh?  I was surprised by a few things:  First, it only takes 175 pages and 50K words to make a novel?  Shit, I have a romance story (I’d never call it a novel) that’s only 2/3 finished and I already have 53K+ words and 153 pages.  I guess I’m close…if only I could figure out how to end it without it being so trite.  I know, it’s a romance story – they’re all trite and silly.  That’s their source of popularity, right?

My second surprise was that so many people that commented on the post had participated before and had actually placed or been finalists.  No kidding.  I’m a total wallflower when it comes to my creative work.  I’m terrified that people will see it…whether they like it or not…that’s me out there.  Hell, I don’t even have a pen name.  I used my own name in the story I wrote.

/rolls eyes at self

I agree with the folks that commented that they’d not put it up on their blog.  It could be stolen and it could be used against you.  The fun part would be if my story actually picked up steam and worked out well.  I’ve read several articles about books – real, published ones – that started out as blogs.  I guess that could be pretty fun.  I thought I could actually do one about work.  Enough stupid stuff happens here on a daily basis, that if I could be witty and straight with it all the time, that’d be some good stuff, even though it’s been done a few hundred times.  I’m already 6 days behind, and I don’t usually post on weekends, so I’ll have to push it a little more than the usual…if I’m going to do it.  Hmmm…

Anyway!!  Very little in the way of sports stuff for me today.  We did get a ChiSox fan in the White House.  How cool is that?  All my favorite football teams play this weekend, and I may actually be around to see some games this time.  The Pack has a must-win against the ViQueens, and the newly-contracted Aaron Rodgers needs to play like he means it.  I still love you, Aaron, but no more choking under red zone pressure, sweets.  I’ve been working on the List Love for Hot NFL Wide Receivers.  I’ve got it all narrowed down, but I’ve got to locate some good photos.  If you are reading this and want your fave WR considered (on hotness alone) where I may have left him behind because his roster photo sux, let me know.  I’ll check it out on your suggestion.

Yes, that is how my beloved Packers fell, in OT, to the still-undefeated Tennessee Titans.  That’s also how the Dolts managed to pull one out against the Patriots late last night.  Oddly enough, I feel okay about being beaten in overtime by the Titans.  They’re a really good team (as evidenced by how they can hold on to win over other good teams), and we made some mistakes that we’ll have to atone for.  Ah, but the Dolts winning once again in a squeaker – that Adam Vinatieri better make some good money – that one kills me.

I know, it’s still a win for them, and the near-hapless Dolts are now 4-4.  The same as my Pack.  People around here can celebrate, but they should all do so just after thanking a benevloent being for the creation of Adam Vinatieri and his leg.  The same could be said for the Titans and Rob Bironas’ leg, but I think there were more factors at play in that game than the Dolts/Pats matchup.  We should have been able to seal the deal but couldn’t get it done.  The Dolts seem to always make it on a wing and a prayer after some ridiculous crap on the field.  I did hear that the roof on Lucas Oil was open last night (no precip expected, obvs), so maybe that helped.

My adopted hometown’s team was on bye this week, so no Saints news for ya, other than apparently, they had a heck of a time getting home from London.  I don’t know what to say about this whole water-pill deal, so I won’t say anything.  I guess maybe I don’t get it?  Everyone knows that Reggie Bush is out from arthroscopic surgery and who the hell knows what is up with Jeremy Shockey.

I’m about to kick a field goal here at work to get some things in under deadline, just over the cross-bar probably, so I’m wrapping this up.

Good:  Aaron Rodgers was signed to a contract extension by the Packers.  I still think he rocks.  Days off coming soon!  I work well under pressure.

Bad:  I’m a procrastinator; there, I’ve admitted it.  I am having a hard time being excited about the DH’s new job…will it last this time?  I’ve stopped talking about Michigan Football because it is so bad.  Still a fan tho…just don’t wanna talk about it.

Ugly:  Seriously, I’ve decided that working with a bunch of women is bad for me.  All the nitpicking, catty, backstabbing, ridiculous behavior kills me.  I’m better off with the guys.

Funny:  I saw a guy in the mall wearing a t-shirt that said only “I’m not dead yet…” in white letters on a black background.  I needed nothing else to spur me to say “I feel happy!”  I crack myself up.

is all I have this morning to write a coherent post.  It’s too bad that my typing skills do not include some way away from finger dyslexia.  Here we go:

Of course, as you all should be fully aware, my beloved Packers beat up on the whiny-baby Colts.  I was actually quite good yesterday and didn’t rub anyone’s face in it.  I did wear the biggest Cheesehead grin going all day though.  Aaron Rodgers is still my hero, I heart Nick Collins, and boy, is it damn funny that the Dolts had to try three times before getting in the end zone at the end of the game.

The Tampa Bay Rays are going to face the Phillies in the World Series.  That starts tomorrow, I believe, and I think Fox has it.  I guess Vegas books are going to be shelling out the big dollars if the Rays win the Series.  Too bad I’m not a betting girl.  Not that I would have picked them anyway, I guess.  Who knew they’d go from last to first?  In one season!

The Saints lost Sunday and lost Reggie Bush (again).  I am quite fond of Reggie (he’s not bad looking, either), but does that boy get hurt a lot or what?  I’m hoping that Deuce can pick up some of the slack.  The Patriots beat the Broncos last night.  I’m a fan of Jay Cutler (or, as my DH says “Cutlet”), and I think he’s a decent QB too.  Not hot, but whatevs.  I am glad that the Pats won again – it shows that they can still do it.  They need to get a couple more wins in before coming to Indy – it’d be nice for the Colts to lose a few in a row.  Nothing like demoralizing a city of fair weather fans.

I’m almost out of time, so let’s cut to the chase:

Good:  Lambeau Leaps!  We secured tickets to the Thanksgiving game in Detroit.  We’ll get to watch the Lie-Downs get creamed by Tennessee…

Bad:  Stupid revival of the “special project” at work.  Guess where I am all week?

Ugly:  The potential that Brett Favre is so mad at the Packers for whatever he’s mad about (I thought this was all over, since he’s been traded and is playing somewhere), that he’s sharing secrets about the Pack to other teams?  I guess it’s probably good that they’ve changed some of the plays since he’s been there.

Funny:  A quote from an Indy Star writer:

At this rate, the only way Peyton will get to the Pro Bowl is if Eli takes him as a guest.

not to gloat.  Maybe I’ll figure that out tomorrow when I can wipe this stupid “eat shit, you bunch of whiny-assed Dolts fans!” grin off my face.

No time today – damned work and all that.  Straight to the point:
