Death comes in 3s June 29, 2009

or maybe 6s. So, you may have heard that Michael Jackson died. Sho’ nuff. The autopsy results were “inconclusive”, which means to me that no one should really be told what really happened to the man. The sad thing is that I think he’s been pretty much dead for the past five or seven years, just still with a heartbeat and breathing air.
Farrah Fawcett also passed away, splitting the news of Ed McMahon and the King of Pop. I personally loved her in Cannonball Run. In fact, I, too, love trees.
The world probably breathed a sigh of relief when the three was completed, regardless of the loss impacted. Death comes in 3s, right? Well, bring on numbers 4 & 5 – Billy Mays, the really freaking annoying pitchman for OxyClean, and some actress (awesomely) named Gale Storm. I have yet to see a news story on the cause of 50-yr-old Mays, but Ms. Storm seems to have passed from your basic “old age” and failing health.
So, who might be #6?
It’ll turn around and bite’cha! April 16, 2009

So, I might be the High Priestess of Procrastination, but I hateto put off the really important things. Like doing my taxes. I don’t know, but I think it’s because there’s actually a penalty ($$$) if you’re late, and I’m not paying the government one more penny than I absolutely have to. (Un)Fortunately, I am not the accountant in the house. The DH takes care of the money stuff, mostly because he’s totally anal-retentive and hates the way I do it. It’s fine with me.
Of course, he waits until last night to submit our state taxes. He’s already had it calculated, and since we owe about $100, they aren’t getting our money any earlier than necessary. Normally, I’m okay with that. Last night, though, it was 6.5 hours of pure hell listening/watching him wrestle with the e-file system that was bogged down from everyone else trying to submit at the last minute. Then, because Murphy’s Law works, the DSL went down and he couldn’t get the confirmation that it actually went through. He was pissed and I was pissed at him for the tantrum he decided to throw. Not a good night.
However, in an ‘all’s well that ends well’ theme, he was able to get in this morning with the repaired DSL and confirm that it was sucessfully submitted last night – at 11:59pm. Really. He swears next year that he’ll be doing the paper forms again.
In way less gripe-y things, Spring has re-sprung here in the Circle City. It’s a beautiful day outside, and that brings out the folks. In my lovely walk to get lunch, several opportunities for ogling behind sunglasses presented themselves, notably two firefighters, a cop, and a man in a 3-piece suit (yum!). Even better was the super cutie working behind the counter at Subway…I’ve scoped him out before, but I will not refuse repeat opportunities to check out hot guys.
Since I haven’t done one in a while, here’s a Good, Bad, Ugly, and Funny:
Good: I have a short day today and tomorrow off, and I plan on enjoying them for all they’re worth. Ogleworthy guys and sunglasses to hide behind.
Bad: Just as the weekend arrives, so does the rain.
Ugly: I just spent 30 minutes listening to the RFAC go on and on about how her boyfriend wasn’t allowed to pick out an engagement ring for her and now the one that she wants is on layaway because she just knows that they’re going to get married and they’re going to live by her mom and they’re blah blah blah blah blah blah…
Funny: I walked around all morning with a big, fat grin – more than one person asked what I was up to. I love that game.
Hot Guy Pic!
I was inspired by a couple of guys (from the fire station across the street) I saw running earlier…

I do not want to do work today. I know, I just had a day off, thanks to the foot of snow in Indy! Buuuuuuuuutt…that doesn’t meant that I want to be in this carpeted Cube’o'Doom, surrounded by folks that annoy me.
Lalalalalalalala…don’t want to do anything productive….
I sort of have to do stuff. I have an 11:00 meeting with the boss to discuss my projects. No big deal – I’m rocking the proverbial casbah. Until then…I’ll use more ellipses and talk some sports.
Keeping A”Brett” of the News: First, and in a mixture of wretched amusement and gut-wrenching sadness, this news. (Thanks to CheeseheadTV.) I hope Brett doesn’t go to the ViQueens. I really do. It would be a sad, sad day to see that man in purple and gold. In fact, I just threw up a little in my mouth about it. Seriously? Would he do this to try and get back at the Pack for not wanting to deal with his crap anymore? If so, he’s a worse diva than I previously thought. I was on his side when he said he retired. I believed those tears (damn it!). I was on his side when he decided he wanted to come back – it’s what he does, that football thing – and I couldn’t deny that watching him play was still fun. When he became a giant douche bag and pulled all of his shit, eventually ending up with a shitty season with the Yets, I defected from his side. Do not misunderstand me – I own and treasure an autographed football from Brett. I was giddy as a kid when I visited Hattiesburg, MS – dangerously close to his stomping grounds. But this crap needs to stop already.
Rubbing the First Fan in the Faces of the Cubs: Big thanks to a ChiSox fan here at work. He sent me the link to this. Yeah, the money will go to charity and it’s not yet approved by the Obama camp, but what a fun idea. Sox fans (Obama) go to the White House, Cubs fans (Blagojevich) go to the big house.
Stillers, Once Known for their Steel Curtain D-Line, Now Have an “O”-Line: In more “Sportsbama” news, the new Prez is rooting for the Stillers. Sadly, he (barf, barf) says they’re right behind Da Bears in his pea-pickin’ wittle heart. Hwlech! We are not in accord on this, Mr. President. While I’d be fine with the Steelers winning, I’d rather see the Cards take it. Why not?
Hey, Is That Your Butler? The Bulldogs are currently ranked #13 in men’s college basketball. Still the underDAWGS, they get no love from the “user rankings” on Yahoo!Sports. I think that may be because all the “users” of Yahoo!Sports are too caught up in the big name schools to notice the 18-1, mostly underclassman, scrappy little team from Indianapolis. Sorry that the supposed big DAWGS (read: Georgetown) are sucking it up and folks fail to recognize this. Go Butler!!
UM, Not So Much: I support Michigan football without fail, Wolverine Hockey some less, but UM Basketball is leaving me blue. I suppose it has since the end of the Fab Five (don’t even talk to me about Webber’s disastrous timeout). I know, it’s rebuilding and it’s tough for a team that didn’t participate for a few based on some…uh…infractions. We just need a little consistency now, and perhaps that will come with time. I just happen to not be patient with this part of sports.
That was a great break. Maybe I’ll come back later to post something else. Procrastination, you know, isn’t something that just comes naturally. You have to work on it and perfect those time-wasting skills!

I’m an admitted procrastinator. If there’s an opportunity to goof off before the deadline looms, I’m probably going to do it. It’s not all the time, but it happens a lot, especially at work. Since that’s what I’ve been doing all morning, I thought I’d share some of my favorite ways to burn time.
- Sports websites: My favorites are NFL.com (go and vote for your Pro Bowl picks here), MLB.com, the sites for my favorite teams (Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Chicago White Sox, and Detroit Red Wings), and a few assorted sports blogs. You can see the blogroll over there for some of those.
- Ogling hot athletes: Closely related to the above, checking out photos of my favorite athletes is a great way to spend time. Why not look at the gorgeous scenery? Try Getty Images. Very nice.
- Internet Movie Database: I think the quotes/lines from the movies are user-submitted, but can provide for a good laugh. If you’re ever wondering who that guy was that played in that one moive, they’ve probably got it here. There’s also stuff for tv/cable shows, if you’re interested in that.
- Comics: Try Comics.com. I recommend Get Fuzzy and Pearls Before Swine.
- Fansites: This is where you can chat with other folks who like the same celebs you do – usually without arguing, unlike sports comment boards where the flame wars can really wage over some stupid shtuff. My personal fave is Loving Gabriel, a fansite for Gabriel Macht. Go check him out on IMDB.
- The crossword puzzle of the day: I don’t know how many other papers online have this, but you can do the crossword puzzle online at the Indianapolis Star’s website. I find it helps to get my brain jumpstarted when I really do need to work.
- Random websites: I like to surf for random stuff. As long as the firewall/filter doesn’t put the kibosh on the site (not that I surf for anything like that at work), some of these are good fun. Try Found Magazine and my favorite standby, EBay.
Have YOU wasted time today? You just did.
