First thing: I have a little bit of a problem with all this morality business when it comes to Michael Vick. Do NOT misunderstand me: I love dogs, and what the guy did was despicable. However, he’s served his time, is pretty much broke, and is, in all honesty, a pretty good athlete. On the other hand is Donté Stallworth: the dude ran over a guy after having a few too many and killed him. He killed another human being. He spent a whopping 24 days in jail, gets some house arrest/probation time, and has been suspended without pay for one season. When he comes back next year, I hope that there’s some major outrage on this one too. Otherwise, what the hell is wrong with us and our priorities?
Additionally, I’m not a big fan of Roger Goodell, but this quote is money:
“As you recognized both at and following the hearing, guilt or innocence as a matter of criminal law is not the same as a violation of NFL policies,” Goodell wrote.
Emphasis mine.
Second thing: I really dislike political commentators, and moreover, I hate politics. Too bad that damn near everything has some political influence/factors. I am so sick of hearing all of the garbage over every bat of an eyelash from the President – from both sides! Can someone just tell me the facts, please? And I mean facts, not some skewed perversion of them.
Okay, okay. On with the good stuff:

A nice day for a white [trash] wedding August 10, 2009

I try not to be judgemental, at least outwardly. I think a lot of things about a lot of people or situations, but I rarely say those things I thought. I did well holding my tongue this weekend at a wedding.
My DH has been friends with the bride for a very long time. They attended secondary school together, and she was a bridesmaid in our wedding. We try to see her when we make the trip to MI. She has never been to Indy to see us. The DH saw her around Christmastime. She was not dating anyone. Fast-forward to the end of last month: she’s got a Facebook status up saying she’s engaged!
The wedding was Friday afternoon – less than a month from the announcement. It’s not easy to book places for a wedding in a hurry, and Friday afternoons work in a pinch. The Little Wedding Chapel reminded me of a place you’d find in a dark corner of Vegas, yet without any of the charm. The wedding party was a bit mismatched in their shades of lilac and levels of dressiness, but it was a Domino’s wedding (30 minutes or less or it’s free!), so that didn’t matter much.
I understand that this was kind of a last minute deal. The groom is military of some sort and is looking to be assigned to a base any time. That’s fine. They presumably wanted to get married quickly so that she could move with him. Great. It does not excuse the bride’s undergarments showing in the openings of her overly decorative wedding dress. Alterations certainly take less than a month, and so does buying the right bra.
Retracting the claws a bit, I have to make an observation. The wedding ceremony, I think, is something that should be revered. I think those vows are pretty serious, and should be taken so. This wedding ceremony seemed like a big joke. Even more odd, the “happy couple” didn’t seem so much like either part of that (happy or a couple) during the reception. They didn’t hold hands or talk to people together. She had to call him over when we were talking to her so she could introduce the DH as her “best friend”.
The bride’s aunt hit on my DH all afternoon. Yes, he’s quite a handsome man: I know, I have good taste. It’s probably good that there wasn’t any music worth dancing to…she probably would have been all over him. I had great restraint – I didn’t even make any snide comments, if you can believe that.
The bride and groom were out of their “formal” attire so quickly at the reception, one was quickly reminded that it was at a park pavilion that I, in my dress and heels, helped decorate at the last minute. There were people in jeans and cut-off shorts…and the vast majority smoked like chimneys. I was thankful for the breeze. I could go on, but I’ll just keep sounding more and more snobby. I honestly think a nice and tasteful event could have been had just as easily. But what do I know. At least the weather was nice. It rained all day Saturday.
Sports post later. Duty calls.

Ah, so much has happened since I have last posted. Mostly, I’ve either been busy or lazy, so the writing thing hasn’t happened. So, now, it’s catch-up time. I’m always trying to do this in fun and somewhat interesting ways, so here’s a new one. In line with the Jay-Z and Ja Rule song “Can I get a…”, I’m going to line out some random thoughts. Hold on to your lunchbox…

Yeah, even God is tired of all this bullshit.
So, Sammy Sosa tested positive for PEDs in 2003. Someone leaked this new name to the press. Now, perhaps if you aren’t a cynical person such as I, you are surprised. You may be appalled and heartbroken. If you’re a Cubs’ fan, you’re used to this kind of disappointment, but that may not make it any easier.
Personally, it would be impossible to care less. See, I am at the point where I will not be surprised if the 2003 list says that my 87-year-old grandfather tested positive for PEDs. That’s why his garden freaking rocks every year, dammit, and my measly tomato plant is suffering a slow death.
What I would like to see is the list published. Just get it over with. This way, everyone can be bummed/outraged/whatever all at once and then we can move on. There will be one giant-ass media blitz about it, and then they can all STFU and go back to worrying about Lindsay Lohan and her Twittered boobs.
Let’s just get on with it, shall we?
Why does ESPN suck so much? June 3, 2009

Why do they suck SO FREAKING MUCH that the goddamned Versus channel that I DO NOT GET on my satellite package is showing the Stanley Cup Finals? Why, instead of trying to show some actual sports – or ones people may actually be interested in watching – was I watching Baseball Tonight with the volume off so I could follow the bottom score tracker? Yeah, Baseball Tonight. And then Sportscenter. Whoop-de-freaking-do.
Anyone know where I can stream tomorrow’s game for free on the web? I’m not paying the extra $$ just to have Versus. Or the CBC. If I get the CBC, I’ll have to tear the DH away from watching curling. Seriously. Seriously. I need a link. Anyone?
I think that ESPN has gone the way of MTV. No longer do we actually show what we were built upon (sports or music videos), but we’ll have 9,000 different shows to talk about them. Or the people that play/make them. Or whatever.
The Wings lost to a “desperate” Pens last night at Mellon Arena. How they got away without being called for too many men on the ice for as long as they were out there, I don’t know. I didn’t get to watch, so I can only speculate based on what I get to read in reviews and rehashes today. Damn!

Tomorrow’s game is also in PGH. I have faith. I have hope. I have pictures of hot hockey players.

I feel so much better today. I think everyone has to go through those days of total shit to get to and to appreciate the good ones. So, this is like a 180-degree difference…
…which is a whole fucking lot like the damned Chicago White Sox did yesterday! WHAT THE FUCK? 20-1? Yeah, it’s freaking hilarious when it happens to the Spankees, but it ain’t funny when it happens to the South Siders. Oh, yes, I know – Hottie Deluxe Joe Mauer killed us with his big bat (pausing a moment to think of the really dirty images and thoughts on that line…okay, I’m good) what with his grand slam, 872 doubles and perfect dazzling grin, but it is well-documented that I can love individuals while hating the team. Even my good friend N sends me an email with the subject line “Oh for the love”. Anyway, that bit of bile out the way…
I would like to post my sincere and heartfelt appreciation for our military personnel, the police officers, the firefighters (more dirty thoughts…), and those that we have loved and lost. It is a brave and wonderful thing that you do/have done, and for that, I am extremely grateful.
On the military note, I have to bring up the kid in this story I read. Here’s a photo of a kid, 19 no less, fighting in Afghanistan in his pink boxers and flip-flops. Turns out he ran out of sleeping quarters to help when they came under fire, and he was worried that he’d be in trouble for not being in full uniform. I say to give this lad a medal for bravery. I’d probably sleep in full riot gear in such a place. I’ve included a link to the story in the pic, so click to read the AP story on Yahoo!.

Let’s explore the mysteries of our current world, shall we?
Why is it:
- that people have posted office hours but don’t come into work until after that posted time has come and gone?
- that people can’t figure out that you have to reach highway speeds when merging onto the interstate? We are going to killed, people!
- that I can’t help but laugh at the RFAC when she walks around with her stupid hat on because she “has a migraine”. I don’t know about y’all, but when I get a migraine, there’s very little way I’m functioning normally, and with as Gawd-awful terrible hers (supposedly) are, she shouldn’t be able to freaking move, let alone work in a brightly-lit and somewhat noisy office situation in front of a bright LCD computer monitor.
- that everyone gives a shit about this book written about Alex Rodriguez? Both the writer of the book and the subject of the book are big fat liars and neither deserve a minute more of our time than they’ve already Hoovered up.
- that the Chicago White Sox seem to have no offense other than home runs?
- that the Red Wings are now behind in the series?
- that Joe Mauer has his own theme song? And why is it that this isn’t his first? I love Joe, really, I do, but isn’t this a little, um, egotistical? “…they’re messin’ with the chosen one…”? F’real?
- that Brett Favre thought anyone would buy his “I’m retired” schpeel again. While I won’t give up my autographed football, I fell off that bandwagon after last year’s fiasco.
- (sorry, another one about Brett Favre)that Brett Favre seems to think that he’ll get to enact some sort of revenge on Green Bay? This talk about his talks with the ViQueens means little. Sure, maybe he’ll sign with them and maybe he’ll come to the Frozen Tundra to play the Packers. Maybe he’ll even win, but it would be a hollow victory, tasting completely like shit when the fans that once loved, supported, and cheered for the man boo him with the ferocity of a million scorned women. They say Hell hath no fury…he’d better watch the fuck out for Packers fans who feel betrayed.
I think I’m going to blow the rest of the afternoon looking at law schools.

There are some things that I will never understand: quantum physics, statistics, and how weathermen (weatherpersons??) still have jobs; but I have to tell you that one of the biggest things I don’t get is the decision to get rid of teachers. Follow me on this one:

Let me just say…this year’s March Madness is and was just that – madness. Who would have thought that Sparty would have knocked off a cocky L’ville? And, while I had Villanova pulling out one upset, I did not see them beating Pitt. Truth be told, I didn’t see anyone beating Pitt. Oh well. That bracket has already been introduced to the recycle bin after being blown out of the water this weekend.
It just shows that I’m not missing anything March 26, 2009

I’m not a big reality tv fan. I have enough drama and goofiness in my life to get into why other folks put themselves such situations on national television. There are a few exceptions – I heart Speeders and World’s Dumbest on TruTV, but those just like to make fun of people – and I love Maury. Trashy talk show fodder like the ubiquitous DNA test is awesome. I used to watch while unemployed to make me feel better about myself.
But, I digress. This whole tirade came about because the DH and I were finishing up at the gym, and this horrifically bad cover/remake of Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” starts playing on whatever satellite radio channel they were playing. The DH just shrugs – he’s not an ’80s hair band fan. I, on the other hand, am flabbergasted. Who the hell wrecked this song?
In the age of the Internet, I don’t have to do more than a few keystrokes in Blackle (home sweet home remake) to find my answer. Carrie fucking Underwood. And, apparently, she did it as part of the American Idol hoopla when she was on there. Let me just say…I think it blows. It has no heart and certainly no soul. Truly, the original wasn’t a musical masterpiece, but PLEASE! Barf, barf, barf.
It got me thinking if there were other really bad remakes/covers that I’ve heard. I’m sure there are, I’ve maybe just intentionally blocked them from my mind. Again, we head to the Internet: While I can thankfully say I’ve never heard either Britney covering Joan Jett or Avril Levigne shredding Bob Dylan, this is a good list. Here, on Epinions, the author makes a good list, and gawd, he’s right about those songs. And, once again, I’ve never heard this version, but calling out Duran Duran for making a cover of Public Enemy’s “911 is a Joke” is the absolute right thing to do. However, Michael Slezak at Entertainment Weekly (EW.com) hit just the right one: that bubble-headed no-talent dimwit Jessica Simpson and her remake of Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots (Are Made for Walkin’)”.
And on that (really flat) note, I gotta go do work. To erase the bad taste in your mouth from the bad covers, check out the Hot Guy Pic today:

I've never watched Lost, but I'd take him for a roll in the sand. (photo: Yahoo!)
