I couldn’t decide if I wanted to do a whole bunch of posts since I have a few subjects to go over or if I just wanted to cram it all into one.  I determined that this may keep me from rambling too much.  Maybe.

I am going to “adopt” a soldier to send stuff to.  I have a total soft spot for military personnel, and have been mulling this over in my head for a while.  I am still a little nervous.  What if “my” soldier finds my letters really freaking annoying?  Will the care packages make up for it?  I guess, overall, it doesn’t matter.  He or she doesn’t have to write back.  But, I could be lucky and get someone who appreciates my obnoxious sense of humor…here’s hoping.

Next subject:  I should probably move before I go insane.  The State of Indiana passed a budget yesterday.  It only took 9,273 days to do it.  Kidding – it only felt like that long.  The worst part is that the state budget includes a component to bail out the worst government department ever - the fucking CIB.  That’s the Capital Improvement Board for the City of Indianapolis, and this little group is responsible for the operation/maintenance(!)/whatever of two of the city’s four sports venues – Conseco Fieldhouse and the blasted behemoth that is Lucas Oil Stadium.  Why does the CIB need a bailout you ask?  It’s because they’re a group of idiots that a) don’t know shit about how much it costs to build and/or operate anything and b)like to kneel at the throne of Irsay.  Truly, it is an extension of the overwhelming dislike I have for the Colts and their ownership, but it has it’s own twist.  I’m now paying for it in multiple ways.  It’s not enough to bump up the sales tax and food/beverage tax and tourism taxes (hotels and rental cars), no, now I have to pay for it out of my State income taxes.  MOTHERFUCKERS.

Moving on before I blow a gasket somewhere:  The White Sox have now won 4 in a row, defeating Cliff Lee and his Indians last night in a weather-shortened game.  Yeah, bishes, 11-4 brings us above the .500 mark.  That would be nice to hang onto.  I do have to say that Michigan alumni Clayton Richard didn’t do half bad last night in his start.  I’ll not complain about it, at least.  We’re set to rumble again tonight – let’s go for the sweep!

The DH and I went to the Indianapolis Indians’ game last night and had a good time.  We had great seats on the third base line (my preference), and watched a crazy one.  Indians’ infielder Chris Barnwell now has a new nickname – Barney – from us for his, um, antics last night.  I still think Mike Koplove has a weird approach and he earned the loss, gaining two strikes from this fan.  Sorta-hottie Garrett Jones and his big bat have been called up to PGH, and Jeff Salazar got the same deal.  Once again, we’re trying to groom the kiddies for an upward move…at least we’re not in last place this year.

Super Hottie Matt Kata is still surviving on the Astros’ roster, occasionally making big enough plays to stay alive in the Majors.  That’s good enough for me; they keep video highlights involving his hotness coming on the Astros’ website.  At last night’s Indians’ game, there was an announcement about a Fantasy Night at Victory Field…the DH says “nope, that was last year for my wife.  One season too late.”  He’s a good man for taking my drooling in stride.

In closing: Welcome back to the bigs, Rich!

That, my friends, is what I have to work on today.  Not that this is much of a change from every other day, but sometimes I do have important projects.  Like last week, for example.  However, I completed all of those and now I am stuck with the mindless stuff.

Anyway, that gives me more time and incentive to do stuff like blog and research law schools.  You know, goof off.

Interesting tidbit before I get to your regular dose of sports and me drooling over hot athletes:   I found the Overrated List blog sort of by accident.  I thought it was pretty cool that you could submit your own, so I did.  Mine went up yesterday.  Good site, Andrew.

Back to your anticipated programming: sports!

  • I am trying to keep my excitement under wraps for Game 6 tonight between the Wings and Pens.  It’s back at Mellon (the Igloo), and the Wings are ahead in the series 3-2 after an awesome Game 5 at the Joe.  The DH doesn’t want to watch the game for fear that he’ll jinx it.  I’d like to watch it so I can yell at the TV a lot.  Part of me wants the Wings to win it just to get it done, but the other part wants it to come back to the D for Game 7 madness…Go Wings!
  • I am also trying to stay positive for Matt Kata – the word on the web is that Kaz Matsui will be back with the Astros against the Cubs tonight.  The Astros bought Matt’s contract from Round Rock when Matsui went on the DL…I’m hoping only good things for him now that Kaz is back.
  • Once again, the former Indy Indian I like to call “Pornstache”, Josh Wilson, was called on to pitch in a Major league game.  He didn’t fare as well for the Padres as he did for the Diamondbacks, but…at least he’s playing in the bigs, right?

I should get back to the mindless drivel since I’m supposed to have it done today.  Before I go, I leave you with this Hot Guy:

If he were pitching in Houston today, Id be able to watch for double-hottie pleasure. Instead, hes rehabbing with the AAA Iowa Cubs. Poor fragile thing. (Photo: Getty Images via SI.com)

There are things about my job that I just love.  One of them is the ability to stick it to some people when they need it.  I’ll readily admit that it’s an ego thing: I simply adore being right.  Fortunately for me and whatever soul I may have left, I can also admit when I’m wrong…it may be grudgingly, but it will happen. :)   The overall effect of this is that I’m having a great day – perhaps the mirror opposite of yesterday.

Things of interest:

  • The Red Wings have to play a Game 7 against the Rubber Ducks.  I think that this sucks, but have confidence that they can win it.  I like Carolina for their series (also to a Game 7) against the Bruins (sorry, SD), and I can’t shake the feeling of the Pens turning it on against the Caps in that final game.  I could be wrong.  It’s happened before.
  • The ChiSox finally won a game!  It is about damned time, guys.
  • As a follow-up to yesterday’s discussion on Jenks’ message pitch, I’m happy to say that there was a fine but no suspension.  I think this one’s officially over, and we can all stop talking about it now.

I will be out of the office until the 19th.  I have considered throwing together a few posts to fill in the gaps, but the only days you might miss me (ha!) are tomorrow (Thursday) and Monday, since Fridays I tend to miss posting.  We’ll see how it goes.  Until we chat again, here’s your Hot Guy Pic:

The power of fear November 21, 2008

Fear is both a demotivator and a motivator.  It is healthy and unhealthy.  It can be fun (as in watching a scary movie or going to a haunted house) or it can be awful (as in waiting on the MRI scans for your friend with cancer).  I think I’ve read somewhere that it’s good to admit your fears – it might help you to get past them (if they’re that debilitating kind, for sure).  In that spirit, I have a confession:

I have fear.

It’s no phobia – very little can scare me that bad, I think.  But, today, I have two kinds of fear:  Fear of working out with my new trainer and fear of not being fit as I get older.

The fear of not being fit (read: not being healthy) as I get older really hit home this year.  I turned 30.  I know, 30 isn’t old, but that “milestone” of a birthday got me thinking about what I’d like to be doing with myself heading toward that next milestone.  I decided that being unfit – not really fat, but not skinny and certainly not fit – was one of my worst problems…and it has been for a while, but I guess I wasn’t ready to deal with it.  Now I am, and I am taking the proper steps (I hope).

Those proper steps start with calling up a friend of a friend who just happens to be a fitness trainer.  She’s fit – and looks damned good for her age – and I think she knows what she’s doing.  But, I have fear…I am afraid.  I’m afraid of the sure-to-happen pain and soreness.  I’m afraid of hurting myself on one of those contraptions that people use in the gym.  I’m afraid of looking like a total ass in the gym.

But, the fear of aging faster with my unfit self is greater, and that’s the fear that motivates me to treat myself better.  I think, once I get there and get going with the trainer’s help, I’ll be okay and that OTHER set of fears will fade.

I’m sure you’ll read more about this should you decide to stop by again.  In the meantime – a more positive thought (and one I’ll try to keep with me this evening):
