Chicks dig the long ball? June 11, 2009

The DH and I were strolling in our local mall and we passed a store that sells athletic shoes and clothes related to the different sports teams. One of the t-shirts in the window was for the Cubs, and it said “Chicks dig the long ball”. I’m sure they have that shirt for a lot of teams (could be for the ChiSox, right? Gotta love those Thomers.), but first I laughed about it being for the Cubs. The Cubs are currently 12th in HRs this year. Woo!
Then, it started to bug me a little. Sure, home runs are cool to see. It’s better if it’s not a solo, but we’ll take it regardless. After thinking more about it, I’ve determined I dig defense way more than offense when it comes to baseball. Football and hockey are totally different stories, but that’s neither here nor there.
The DH loves me, and indulges me frequently, so he asks the obvious question: What’s better than a HR? I started rattling them off:
- A beautiful 5-4-3 double play (so freaking hot)
- A sliding/diving catch with throw from the knees to make the out
- A catcher throwing a guy out at second base
- An outfield throw directly to home (screw the cut-off man!)
- Good pitching mechanics (HUGE thanks to Crane for learning this Angel on said subject (here too)- now I watch for it.)
I just gave myself chills thinking about those. The moral of the story? I guess I need to go find a shirt that says “Chicks dig the double play” and let that double entendre happen.

That’s what the DH says about me as I check, for the fifth time, the box for the Astros-Cubs game. Matt was playing 2B. I had to know how he did. So I’m ate up.
He kinda sucked, btw. I still heart him.

At the risk of sounding seriously mentally ill (or something like that), my #1 Super Hottie, Matt Kata, has been on my mind. Not obsessively so, but he just came to mind a few days ago, and I haven’t been able to clear him out since. Thinking that I could cure this by checking up on him (hey, it works to get rid of a song stuck in my head), I dutifully head to the home page of the Round Rock Express.
He’s not there.
WTF?, I say. I check the News portion (which SUCKS, btw). Nothing. I check the transactions. Nada. Now, curiosity has the best of me, and I click over to the Astros’ page. The Express are the AAA team for the Astros, and Alyson (one of their bloggers) has been known to have a good nugget or two of information on the minor leaguers. Before I get to Alyson’s blog, I see the headline in the column: “Versatile Kata back in the bigs“.
There’s nearly a happy dance in the Cube’o'Doom!
The article says that Matt was called up to fill in at 2B for an injured Kazuo Matsui. For now, Matsui’s on the 15-day DL. That means, for about 15 days, Matt will be living that dream of playing in the Major Leagues.
